Good shot
10 11 2009Today I saw a coyote lurking around the edges of the woods, watching my sheep. Generally, I leave the coyotes alone, and they leave me alone. My dogs and good fences are usually enough.
I opened the window and yelled at it to go away. Through the wind, the rain, and the distance, he never wavered from looking at those sheep. I recognized his body language as the same as when my coonhound gets ready to go after a chicken, cat, or sometimes, coon.
I watched for another minute before I decided I needed to act.
200 yards with open sights? I figured I had a 10% chance of a lucky shot, even using the rail on the deck as a rest. A .375 Winchester doesn’t kick much and has a good long range.
I took the shot.
And hit him. Sometimes luck is with me.
I hate doing that. I really do. But I only have a few sheep left.
And damn, 200 yards with open sights. Through pouring rain. That was a fucking awesome shot.

Hahahahaha. It was, truly, an awesome shot.
Hot damn, girl. Way to go!
Doc: I am so glad you are back to blogging everyday. I have missed you. Awesome shot and for those that think that what Doc did was terrible, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Cheers
Good shot!
I’m always impressed by those good shots, even when the person shooting has a lot of practice and it’s no biggie for them. It’s easy to pull the trigger - hitting your target is a whole different story.
You get anything for the hide around there? Here I think coyote is worth about 15 bucks.
They aren’t worth anything. There used to be a bounty on them, but then the state was almost bankrupted by unemployed coyote hunters and it never made a dent in their numbers. I wouldn’t bother to shoot them, but we have a population of hybrid wolves that a local asshole bred and let loose, so when I get a chance, I shoot ‘em just on the off chance it’s one of the nasty hybrids. (This one may have been, waiting on wildlife report). My resident coyotes don’t bother my livestock. If I shoot them, it’s likely that sheep eaters will move in. If I see one that’s obviously interested in sheep snack, he gets shot, or at least shot at. Once is usually enough.
Good job! Sometimes some boundaries just have to be established.
Damn good shot. And enjoy that feeling, one only another shooter can get. It never gets old when you are on the money. BTW…Lucky sheep!
