The more things change, the more they stay the same

One month ago, I had the house to myself. All of it. Just me and the house. I had it to myself for about 9 weeks. In that nine weeks, I found that while my food and utility bills dropped considerably, the savings were eclipsed by the costs of keeping the fledglings in the air. The quiet though, the quiet and the CLEAN HOUSE were worth every friggin’ penny. This is no bullshit.

A week ago, the first of theĀ  clutch “had” to move back “temporarily”. Two jobs and school, I rarely see her.

This morning, chick number two arrived home with a full truck and a sob story about losing his berth on the river tug he works on. He’ll be here and commuting “for awhile”. Fine. I made a grocery run and he unpacked. Getting more food, mentally computing, how many more mouths, remembering the son’s ever present gf, replacing the 12 pack and getting a 24…

No sooner did I return home than hatch-ling number 3 is here, huddling with the siblings and crying. I’m finally let in on the big secret, that she’s sick of supporting her lazy ass boyfriend, and is kicking him out (of the new apartment I helped her rent so she wouldn’t have to live with the jerk, but she let move in anyway, did I say “I told you so”? No, well, not yet anyway) . I refrained from screaming HALLELUJAH, instead, hugged her, and told her I’m here for her. She isn’t moving in, but she’s here until he gets his stuff out, which will be a couple of days.

Now they’re sprawled in front of the TV together, pizza boxes and empty bottles and shoes all over the place. They’re bickering and making the dogs bark and planning their week.

I am just smiling.

Helping your kids is such a great feeling…mine are 30 something, on their own and I miss being needed so much.

I’m relieved for you, Doc. Hubby and I have 4 kids between 17 and 22 and they do exactly what you’re talking about. It’s so comfortable. And our 8 year old is in heaven when those times roll around.

How wonderful! How different my life might have been if I had felt that type of support as I tried my wings.
