It’s simple. Unschooling works.

Scene - preschool - my daughter’s one and only experience with formal schooling.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
“A fireman”
“Oh honey, you can’t do that. Maybe a nurse?”
“I’m going to be a fireman!”
Reason #73437536 to homeschool unschool your kids.
Don’t doubt it for a second. Formal schooling isn’t a requirement for success. This kid had the time to volunteer with our local fire company from the time she was 15. She earned scholarships to EMT training and Fire Academy. She runs with scissors too. (Strapped in the gear pocket of her tactical pants!) Cuz not only can she handle a hose, but she can save your life.
She did these things because she wanted to. She followed her interests right into a career.
My kid - the paramedic. The unschooled paramedic.

Too bad ABC didn’t come interview you.
This is exactly why we’ve planned on homeschooling even before our little one was born.
I would have ended up telling the off, though… by telling her that my mom was a volunteer firefighter and EMT and was both Firefighter and EMT of the year. And that was definitely before your daughter was in preschool.
Luckily, my daughter never listens to ANYONE.
I was going to rant about unschooling, and the bad rap it gets - but I don’t have it in me to fight that fight anymore. People who don’t want to understand the concept never will. A million years of successful unschooling brought about the civilization we have today - formal education did not.
very very cool
I adore your daughter and her compatriots, they save thousands of us every day. I don’t have kids but do agree that unschooling smart kids is the best. That, and free libraries and available ground transportation will take the kids, and our society in general, to better places by far.
You don’t need to fight that fight anymore, Doc. The results speak for themselves.
The results speak. Yes, they do. love, Val
You go girl. (both of you)
My new motto: There Is No Uncaring in Unschooling
OMG. Someone is still saying things like that? ::shivers::
If anyone was to tell my daughter that she couldn’t become a fireman, she would probably have no idea what they were talking about. After all, her mommy(and daddy) is a firefighter-paramedic, as well as her aunt, and two more aunts are firefighter-EMTs.
Oh, man…that brought fiercely proud tears to my eyes and made me grin like a loon. You should offer online parenting classes. I would take them…dead serious. Any books you would recommend for parents like me, just getting started? My kiddo is two…
I was going to say “Very Cool” but someone already did. Oh what the hell: Very Cool.
